Velkommen til en samtale om billedvev gjennom tidene med kunstnerne Simone Hooymans og Kristina Austi, og kunsthistoriker Kari Skarprud Pettersen!
Arrangementet finner sted i den nyåpnede utstillingen The Perpetual Tapestry av Simone Hooymans ved Kunsthall 3,14. I utstillingen møter vi tre vever: to fysiske verk og en vev som trer frem gjennom en flerkanalsanimasjon – et landskap i kontinuerlig forandring, vevd av bier – rikt på referanser til middelalderens billedvev.
Kunsthistoriker Kari Skarprud Pettersen, som kuraterte utstillingen Forteljingar i Tråd ved Bryggens Museum i 2025, vil gi oss et innblikk i den historiske billedveven gjennom eksempelet Åsmund Frægdagjeva av Ragna Breivik (1891–1965). Breiviks største arbeid var ti tepper som viste hele historien om Åsmund Frægdagjeva, slik den er fortalt i den gamle norske folkevisa. Det tok 25 år å veve hele serien. I disse billedvevene møter vi folkevisens store fortellinger, som kampen mot trollene, reisen og heltemotet. Foredraget vil også introdusere andre viktige historiske eksempler og utforske fortellertradisjoner innen billedvev.
Simone Hooymans og Kristina Austi, kunstner og nær kollega av Hooymans, vil diskutere hvordan de arbeider med digitale billedvever – teknikkene og interessene som ligger til grunn – samt de kulturhistoriske kontekstene arbeidet deres inngår i.

Kari Skarprud Pettersen er kunsthistoriker (cand.philol.) fra Universitetet i Bergen og har bred erfaring innen kunst- og kulturhistorie, utstillingsutvikling og formidling. Hun har hatt både faglige og ledende stillinger ved Stiftelsen Bymuseet i Bergen, og begynner høsten 2026 i en ny stilling som rådgiver ved Byrådsavdeling for kunst og kulturutvikling i Bergen kommune. Tidligere har hun arbeidet ved KODE Kunstmuseer og komponisthjem og Bergen Kunsthall. Hennes faglige interesser og kompetanseområder omfatter kuratorisk arbeid, formidling og kunnskapsproduksjon innen kunst- og kulturhistorie.
Simone Hooymans er en animasjonskunstner som forvandler akvarelltegninger til levende, omsluttende universer. Gjennom animasjon utforsker hun klimaendringer, samtidens globale politikk og menneskets forhold til naturen, og skaper et kritisk blikk på verden rundt oss. Arbeidene hennes har blitt vist internasjonalt på festivaler og utstillinger, blant annet Ars Electronica, Netherlands Film Festival og Beijing Short Film Festival, samt ved utstillinger og filmfestivaler i Europa, Asia og USA. Animasjonene hennes har også blitt vist på Statens Høstutstilling og Vestlandsutstillingen i Norge.
Kristina Austi (tidligere navn Daukintytė Aas) ble født i 1978 i Klaipėda i Litauen. Austi er basert i Bergen og arbeider med digital jacquardvev, broderi, installasjoner, video og collage. I arbeidene sine appellerer hun til vår taktile sans gjennom et bevisst og langsomt håndverksarbeid. Hun undersøker vår oppfatning av og vårt forhold til omgivelsene. Kristina ble uteksaminert fra Kunst- og designhøgskolen i Bergen i 2011. Siden 2013 har hun hovedsakelig arbeidet med digital jacquardvev – en teknikk som forener tradisjonell tenkning rundt vevde overflater med ny digital teknologi. Hun arbeider deltid som tekstildesigner ved Innvik AS, et veveri på Vestlandet.

3,14 LIVE: Tapestry across time

Welcome to a conversation about tapestry through the ages with artists Simone Hooymans and Kristina Austi, and art historian Kari Skarprud Pettersen!
The event takes place in Simone Hooymans’ newly opened exhibition The Perpetual Tapestry at Kunsthall 3,14. In the exhibition, we encounter three tapestries: two physical works and a tapestry that emerges through a multichannel animation—a continuously transforming landscape, woven by bees and rich with references to medieval tapestries.
Art historian Kari Skarprud Pettersen, who curated the exhibition Forteljingar i Tråd at Bryggens Museum in 2025, will introduce us to historical tapestry through the example of Åsmund Frægdagjeva by Ragna Breivik (1891–1965). Breivik’s largest work consisted of ten tapestries depicting the entire story of Åsmund Frægdagjeva, as told in the old Norwegian ballad. It took 25 years to weave the complete series. In these tapestries, we encounter the ballad’s epic narratives, including battles with trolls, journeys, and acts of heroism. The talk will also introduce other important historical examples and explore storytelling traditions in tapestry.
Simone Hooymans and Kristina Austi will discuss their work with digital tapestries, the techniques and interests that inform their practice, and the cultural and historical contexts in which their work is situated.

Short biographies of our guests:
Kari Skarprud Pettersen is an art historian (Cand.Philol.) from the University of Bergen and has worked extensively in the fields of art and cultural history, exhibition development, and public engagement. She has held both specialist and leadership positions at the Bergen City Museum (Stiftelsen Bymuseet i Bergen) and will begin a new role in autumn 2026 as an Advisor in the Department of Art and Cultural Development at the City of Bergen. Previously, she worked at KODE Art Museums and Composer Homes and Bergen Kunsthall. Her professional interests and areas of expertise include curating, public engagement, and knowledge production within the fields of art and cultural history.
Simone Hooymans is an animation artist whose work transforms watercolour drawings into immersive, living environments. Through animation, she develops a critical voice on climate change, contemporary global politics and humanity’s relationship with nature. Her work has been exhibited internationally at festivals and exhibitions including Ars Electronica, the Netherlands Film Festival and the Beijing Short Film Festival, as well as in exhibitions and film festivals across Europe, Asia and the United States. Her animations have been shown at Norway’s Statens Høstutstilling and Vestlandsutstillingen.
Kristina Austi (former name Daukintytė Aas) was born in 1978 in Klaipėda, Lithuania. Austi lives in Bergen, Norway; she works with digital jacquard weave, embroidery, installations, video and collage. In her work, she appeals to our tactile sense through deliberate, steady craftsmanship. She questions our perception and our relationship with our surroundings. Kristina graduated from Bergen Academy of Art and Design in 2011. Since 2013, she has been working mostly with digital Jacquard weave: a technique that unites the old way of thinking on woven surfaces with new digital technology. She works part-time as a textile designer at Innvik AS, a weaving mill in Western Norway.
