Samuel Brzeski’s installation art takes over not only Kunsthall 3,14 at Vågsallmenningen, but his work is also presented around the corner at Northing, opening on Saturday 18 January at 15.00.

Mortal Combat by Samuel Brzeski consists of 24 electronic reading devices. The installation presents a way for visitors to “read” books from a definitive “100 Books to Read Before You Die" checklist through a speed-reading application. The work critiques practices of compulsive list-making and neoliberal productivity drives. Whose canon of works are we consuming? Each of the 100 books is delivered one word at a time, at the application’s highest setting of 5000 words per minute—a speed at which practitioners of speed-reading claim to be able to read.

The work is presented in connection to Brzeski’s exhibition Infernal Monologue at Kunsthall 3,14. Both exhibitions at Northing and Kunsthall 3,14 play with the limits of language to contest neoliberal conditions, creating acts of refusal to the contemporary machine.

Samuel Brzeski (b.1988) is an artist, writer and publisher originally from London but based mostly in Bergen, Norway. He works with language as raw material—moulding, stretching and transforming texts on screens, on the page and through sound. Brzeski studied English Literature at University of Sheffield (UK), and Fine Art at Bergen Art Academy (NO). He has participated in the Maumaus Independent Study Program (Lisbon) and Mountain School of Arts (Los Angeles). Exhibitions and performances include The Norwegian National Museum (Oslo), Lydgalleriet (Bergen), Pachinko (Oslo), Bærum Kunsthall, bb15 Space for Contemporary Art (Linz), Meta.Morf—Biennale for art and technology (Trondheim), Black Box Theatre (Oslo), and Chao Art Centre (Beijing). Residencies include Contemporary Art Stavanger Art Writing Residency, Bas Fisher Invitational (Miami) and The Creative Europe Oscillations Program. He runs the publishing presses TEXST and Vibrational Semantics. In 2025, Samuel is a participant in the Jan van Eyck Post-Academic Residency (Maastricht).

Kunsthall 3,14 is pleased to present Brzeski’s work at our neighbour gallery Northing at Østre Skostredet. Northing ¬– Centre for East Asian Art and Culture is the first and currently only non-profit contemporary art centre focusing on promoting cultural exchange between Norway and East-Asia.

Samuel Brzeskis installasjonskunst inntar ikke bare Kunsthall 3,14 på Vågsallmenningen, men arbeidet hans blir også presentert rett rundt hjørnet på Northing. Utstillingen åpnes på lørdag 18. januar klokken 15.00.

Mortal Combat av Samuel Brzeski består av 24 elektroniske leserenheter. Installasjonen gir besøkende muligheten til å "lese" bøker fra en definitiv "100 bøker du bør lese før du dør"-liste gjennom en hurtiglesingsapplikasjon. Verket kritiserer praksiser knyttet til tvangsmessig listeskriving og neoliberale produktivitetskrav. Hvem sin kanon av bøker konsumerer vi? Hver av de 100 bøkene leveres ett ord om gangen, på applikasjonens høyeste innstilling på 5000 ord per minutt – en hastighet som de som praktiserer hurtiglesing hevder at de kan lese i.

Verket vises i tilknytning til Brzeskis utstilling Infernal Monologue på Kunsthall 3,14. Begge utstillingene, både på Northing og Kunsthall 3,14, leker med språkets grenser og samfunnets fastsittende mønstre i den bredere konteksten av neoliberal kapitalisme.

Samuel Brzeski (f. 1988) er en kunstner, forfatter og forlegger opprinnelig fra London, men som for det meste er basert i Bergen, Norge. Han jobber med språk som råmateriale – former, strekker og transformerer tekster på skjermer, på papir og gjennom lyd. Brzeski studerte engelsk litteratur ved University of Sheffield (UK), og kunst ved Bergen Kunstakademi (NO). Han har deltatt i Maumaus Independent Study Program (Lisboa) og Mountain School of Arts (Los Angeles). Kunsthall 3,14 er stolt av å presentere Brzeskis arbeid på vårt nabogalleri Northing på Østre Skostredet. Northing – Centre for East Asian Art and Culture er det første og for tiden eneste non-profit samtidskunst-senteret i Norge som fokuserer på å fremme kulturell utveksling mellom Norge og Øst-Asia.
