How can artistic strategies help in the face of repression? This panel discussion explores themes raised by two films shown at the Bergen International Film Festival (BIFF): The Long Cuban Night (2026) and Rehearsals for a Revolution (2026).
Spanish-Cuban producer and screenwriter Patricia Pérez, co-writer of The Long Cuban Night, and artist Mona Tahani discuss the films and the political situations in Cuba and Iran. The conversation is moderated by Gitte Sætre, debate editor at Kunsthall 3,14.
The Long Cuban Night (2026) follows the artist and activist movement San Isidro (MSI) as it protests against the imprisonment of rapper Denis Solís.
The documentary portrays artists struggling to create and express themselves freely under a government that has long placed artists and activists under pressure. It recounts the movement’s activities through hunger strikes and protests, culminating in the historic demonstrations of 2021. Director Sergio Fernández Borrás combines the activists’ own mobile footage with state television broadcasts to create an intense and urgent portrait of censorship and resistance. This remarkable film won the Tim Hetherington Award at Sheffield DocFest, honoring outstanding humanitarian storytelling.

Rehearsals for a Revolution (2026) reconstructs Iran's history after the 1979 revolution through the stories of five people close to the director
Pegah Ahangarani: her father, a literature teacher, an uncle, a friend, and a daughter. From family movies, photographs, newspapers, and tape recordings to mobile phones and YouTube videos, records from different eras meet personal memories and transform into a record of resistance, restoring a history of violence erased by the state. A much-discussed film at this year’s Cannes, it shows how remembering and recording can themselves become acts of resistance.
